  • Overcoming Limited Infection Prevention and Control Resources
Michael Borg M.D., M.Sc. (Lond), DLSHTM, MMCPath
President, International Federation of Infection Control
The prevention and control of healthcare associated infections depends to a significant extent on the availability of diverse resources. Amongst these essential requirements are the presence of an effective infection control infrastructure and output from infection control teams. It is equally vital that resources are also available at user level to ensure that the efforts, policies and advice of the infection control team is translated into an end result which reduces risk for the patient.

In reality however, those resources are often not present. To an extent or another, infection control professionals worldwide work in environments in which limitations in available resources is a daily reality. This is particularly the case in developing countries where various obstacles and challenges are encountered. Nevertheless it is possible to achieve effective results, even in these circumstances, by focusing on what is attainable and emphasising the less costly and labour intensive interventions.
In this session, Dr. Borg will:
    1. Provide an overview of the impact of limited resources on the epidemiology of healthcare associated infections in both developing as well as more developed countries
    2. Illustrate success stories achieved despite significant challenges and limitations 3. Identify potential approaches to bypass these obstacles
    3. Explain the role of International Federation of Infection Control (IFIC) in promoting infection prevention and control worldwide, but especially in countries with limited resources.
    4. Propose networking opportunities to achieve these goals
